How to Manage Your Compost in Organic Garden

Composting can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. The best part about creating compost is that it can consist of any organic material and we all have access to plenty of that every single day because it is produced by the lawn, garden, and kitchen.  Compost is what happens when leaves, grass clippings, vegetable and fruit scraps, woodchips, straw, and small twigs are combined, then allowed to break down into a soil-like texture. Compost introduces and feeds diverse life in the soil, including bacteria, insects, worms, and more which support vigorous plant growth.

Compost is multi-faceted but not intended as a fertilizer. It offers only a relatively low proportion of nutrients, yet what it does is close to magical. In its finished form as mulch, it reduces evaporation, reduces or prevents weed growth, and insulates the soil from extreme temperature changes. Mulch also keeps the upper inches of the soil cooler in daytime, warmer at night.

Yet compost has humble beginnings. Common, easily accessible materials destined to decay together in a pile will give your soil the gift of minerals and other components it needs. The materials are indeed numerous. 

Regardless of the particular ingredients, making compost is akin to making bread or beer; soil-digesting bacteria like yeasts need warmth, moisture, air and something to feed on to keep them alive and growing. Almost all of the practical problems associated with making compost stem from too much or too little of those basic factors.

Compost is created from layers of grass clippings, leaves, weeds, kitchen scraps and, if available, farm animal manure. If you have meat eaters in your home, don’t use their meat scraps, which will attract rodents. Also, do not use litter from your dog or cat; it doesn’t break down properly and contains too many pathogens.

Over the years, composting has gotten a reputation for being a time-consuming job, but this is not necessarily the case. You don’t need to build a big box or turn the pile every so often. A barrel, a hole in the ground or a pile on top of the ground is satisfactory.

The important requirement is to be sure the waste material is covered with soil, so it doesn’t attract rats, other rodents or flies. You can build your layers directly on the ground, without any frame at all; if you use a container, be sure it is well ventilated.

The trick to successful compost is balancing ingredients high in nitrogen–fresh grass clippings, other fresh, green plant matter, most kitchen scraps–with those high in carbon–leaves, straw, dried grass, washed eggshells, wheat germ or other milled grains that have become too rancid or old to use, and any dried, brown plant matter. Too much nitrogenous matter yields an anaerobic, smelly pile. Too much carbonaceous matter results in a pile that never heats up. The ideal ratio is one part nitrogen to three parts carbon.

Start with a layer of brush–small twigs, no large branches–a couple of inches deep; this will help your pile to breathe. Then, keeping in mind the 1 to 3 ratio of nitrogen to carbon, add a layer of mixed plant material. You may enrich the pile with horse or cow manure. These materials don’t break down; they simply add nutrients to the final product.

Then lightly water the pile so it’s evenly moist. Too much water will interfere with aeration; too little water and the pile won’t ferment. If your pile sits in the open, you should pull a tarp over it before a storm, and then remove the tarp after the rain stops so the pile can breathe. An 8-inch layer of straw mulch spread over the top of the pile serves the same purpose.

Alternate layers until the pile is 5 feet high by 5 feet wide by whatever length you choose. A properly made pile that is loosely packed and well aerated will reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees within a few days. It should smell like wet hay. If the pile fails to heat up, pull it apart and redo it by adding layers of fresh green matter. If the pile becomes anaerobic (is too wet to aerate), pull it apart, let it dry out, use it as mulch and start a new pile.

After three weeks, the pile will have shrunk in size; this is normal. Dig into the pile with a spading fork and completely turn it over until the contents are redistributed; the idea is to put unfermented particles in contact with those that are further along. Let the pile rest, so the temperature will rise again. Turn it a second time five weeks later, let it rest a few weeks and, with luck, you’ll have a rich, crumbly pile of “black gold.”

Also, air is vital to any composting process. Without air (anaerobic) composting is possible but unpleasant with the putrescent of rotting material assaulting your nose. It is usually because there is too much nitrogen and too little air in the mixture. If you have an abundance of trees on your property, autumn leaves can be plentiful and messy, but they are there for your use and can be easily gathered and stored in leaf bags.

Timing is crucial. Your pile is fully composted when it fails to heat up after being turned. Then it is ready to use. And use it with a good feeling, for it is your garden’s natural fuel. Remember your objective, the foundation of every successful garden, is to achieve healthy soil.

Compost supplies the soil with a rich, friable source of humus and helps retain moisture in the garden, in addition to supplying valuable nutrients. By placing grass clippings, fallen leaves and unused plant parts in a compost pile, you are preparing them, through decomposition, to be put back to work for you.

Composting actually recycles garden waste and returns the nutrients that have been taken from the soil. By using organic composting agents, it is possible to speed-up the process of decomposition.

With tough economic times, many companies are closing their doors, losing customers, or restructuring how they do business.  Yet according to one expert, the answering service industry is actually thriving in this economic downturn.  While economic indicators continue to nose dive, answering service and call center sales are reaching record highs.

Outside of the walls of the answering service industry, employers are slashing jobs in alarmingly higher numbers.  In fact more workers lost their jobs last month than projected.  The number of job cuts was so high that November 2008 has just went down as one of the worst months in modern history for American workers and businesses.   United States businesses have cut jobs every month during 2008.   The first six months of the year people were losing jobs at a very moderate pace. In the second half of the year, the financial crisis worsened causing a more drastic reduction in staffing.  The horrific economy coupled with a weak housing market has American companies bracing themselves for a longer and difficult recession.  

The layoffs and job cuts have benefitted the call center industry because companies still have the need to answer their phone calls live.  Companies who have opted to cut staff and utilize voicemail have suffered due to the dropped call ratio of automated answer versus live answering.  The call center sector has benefitted from employee cutbacks by providing an affordable outsourcing solution.  While many companies are closing in house call centers, some are sending the calls overseas, to India or the Philippines, most companies are outsourcing to existing United States call centers.  The idea is to be able to cut costs without sacrificing any aspect that could hurt sales or customer retention.  This reason alone is the major factor on why the United States answering services and call centers are thriving more so than their overseas counterparts.

Although the industry is seeing a growth in the amount of customers, the call volumes of many of their existing clients are dropping.   While the economy is not hurting the answering service industry, it is affecting its customer base.  When clients businesses suffer, their phone rings less, therefore they pay less.  Yet, every call in these economically challenging times is extremely valuable.  With their clients businesses suffering and facing economic uncertainty, a whole new set of challenges face the answering service owner.   Billing and collections have moved to the forefront as far as tasks in a call center.  Customer retention teams are in place to stop clients from making a mistake and cancelling their service.  The answering service industry is fortunate that it thrives in a recession as well as prosperity.  As observed in the last few months, the answering service can be a struggling businesses greatest asset.

It can be an extremely fearful and depressing time in ours lives when the bank has threatened to swoop in and repossess our home. One of the most devastating things we could ever face in life is to be informed that the roof over us and our family will be claimed from us and that we can do absolutely nothing about it. This can result in deep fear and panic and can put a lot of excess pressure on our personal lives.

The truth of the matter is that there are actions one can take to avoid repossession from taking place. Unfortunately most home owners out there are unaware that there are in fact steps which can be taken, instead of simply letting the banks step in and having them repossess the property right from under their nose. If only more home owners out there were aware of the various steps one could take. If this was the case then the repossession rate in South Africa would undoubtedly drop significantly.

See below a list of steps which all home owners are able to take when facing repossession:

- Chat to your bank. This is probably the most crucial step that one could possibly take. If start to realize that you are battling financially and there may be a chance that you could be missing a payment or two in the up and coming month,  then call your bank and inform them of your predicament. Your bank will normally be very understanding and will do everything that they can in order to help you. Note that the last thing the bank would want to do is to reclaim you’re your property. If they were to reclaim the property it would generally mean them losing money as it is an extremely costly procedure for them to go through with.

- As for a ‘grace’ period. This is typically a 3 – 6 month grace period which the bank will give you whereby you don’t have to meet any bond repayments at all. The bank will grant this period in order to give the home owner a chance to sort their financial situation out and hopefully get things together. This is very useful to the home owner as it gives them time to; possibly sell another asset of theirs, get a job (or a higher paying one), wait for a payment from someone else which is potentially due to them but which may only be paid back to them a few months down the line. These are just a few examples. The idea is to buy yourself as much time as you possibly can from your bank. Banks are generally happy to work with you and grant you this time, so use it.

- Ask your bank for an extended loan term. The majority of home owners are typically on a 20 yr term . Most owners are unaware that they able to extend this term to a period of up to 30 yrs. By doing this your monthly repayments will be reduced slightly, however it is worth noting that that more interest will be paid in total over the entire term. When one is facing month to month cash flow problems, reducing your monthly bond repayments can be very helpful. This extended loan term can be reverted back to a 20 year term if desired.

- Ask to reduce the overall amount that you owe the bank. This can be a very helpful tactic if you can get it right. Call up your bank and ask them if they are able to reduce the overall debt amount that you owe. Believe it or not banks are often willing to go ahead with this as it results in them not needing to repossess the property, and hence will save the bank money. This also means that the home owner will continue to give the bank business as they will continue to pay at least a bond (even if it is a smaller bond) rather than no bond at all. Remember that repossessing a property can be extremely costly for the bank so it is usually an absolute last resort for them.

-Contact a repossession expert for help. This is probably one of the best routes to go down if all else fails. There are investors out there who actually specialize in purchasing  houses for cash and as a result have the ability to prevent the repossession of your home. These property investors are generally quite flexible and allow the home owner to remain in their property after the sale is complete. This ultimately means that the home owner will not be booted out of the property and may carry on with their lives. This can be an extremely valuable benefit as often the home owner may have children that are going to a school in the area, or their jobs and possibly even family may be close by, these are things in our lives that we generally like to live near to.

As you can see there solutions that exist out there. Provided that the home owner takes action immediately, the chances of preventing repossession can be high. Take action before the situation gets out of hand and you may be out of your unpleasant situation sooner than you think. It is highly recommended that you start searching for a service that buys houses for cash before its too late.

I hate to say it -but there is NO WAY in hell that Detroit fans should have to even use this Internet Sports software to watch the NFL on the Internet.

But if they do, at least they will be able to watch there beloved Lions. And dont worry – you can connect the Laptop to the family TV and watch the NFL on your TV -AND, all the channels are in HD TV.
