Ten Tips for House Training a Puppy

House training a puppy can be a trying process if you don’t know the effective procedures. So, here are some useful tips to make the process easier.

1. I strongly recommend that you get a dog crate which is the right size for your puppy. It should be just big enough so he can turn around in it and lie down. This will become his den and the instinct of a dog is not to soil his den. So, you can use this instinctive behaviour to make the house training process a bit easier.

2. You need to introduce your puppy to the crate and build a positive association with it. This you can do by using small tasty treats as a positive reinforcement. Give him treats near the crate and gradually lure him into the crate with them. Once he is used to going inside, shut the door very briefly and then gradually shut it for an increasing time. If you give him a food dispensing toy while he is in the crate, he will be quite happy for a time.

3. Once your puppy is used to the crate, you should leave him in it whenever you cannot pay full attention to him. This will prevent any danger of him peeing or pooing in the house. When you take him out of the crate, you should take him outside in case he needs to relieve himself. A rule of thumb is that you leave your puppy in the crate about an hour for every month he is old.

4. When you bring a puppy home and need to house train him, you should understand that it requires close attention and is a full-time job for a few days. Try to arrange it for a weekend or whenever you can be at home for at least a couple of days.

5. There are times when you should, as a matter of course, take your puppy outside since he is likely to need taking out at these times: when he wakes up, before he goes to bed, whenever he gets excited, after a play session, after a training session, after he eats, after he drinks and after he has a nap. Until he is three months old, he may need also to be taken out once during the night.

6. When you take him outside to do his business, keep him on a leash and don’t encourage him to play. Just watch and wait.

7. Whenever he pees or poos outside, you should give him lots of praise and attention.

8. If he does have an accident in the house, make sure you clean it up with hot biological washing powder solution or an enzymatic cleaner. Normal cleaners will not get rid of the smell to the puppy’s nose and he will be attracted to the spot again.

9. Dogs are creatures of habit, so make sure you follow a regular routine with your puppy.

10. When you see him get into position to do his business, give him a “command” such as “Get Busy”, so that the command becomes associated with doing his business. When you have done this for a week, you can take him outside and give the command to see if he responds. If he does, give him lots of praise or a treat. If he doesn’t respond, continue the association process for another week before you try again.

I hope you find these points helpful in house training your puppy.

Vision Tips You Might not Have Heard About

As a person who has been deep into natural nutrition for many years, and has experienced almost no illness for the last sixteen years, to discover that I had serious vision problems was a shock and a scare to me!

Thus, I started going to various eye doctors. Fortunately, one of the eye doctors turned out to be a strong believer in good nutrition, and that gave me real hope of being able to help my eyes without surgery or drugs.

THIS STARTED A NEW STUDY IN MY NUTRITION EDUCATION!

Since the beginning of this new part of my nutrition education, I have learned some very exciting things with regard to eye health! In analyzing my own choices of food and nutritional supplements, I can see that I could have done a better job of caring for my eyes. The good news for me is that my last trip to the eye doctor did show improvement in my vision.

If you do not have any vision problems at this time, I urge you to take a good look to be sure you are doing the best you can do for your eyes. Prevention is so much easier than reversing a problem after it happens to you. If you do have vision problems, do not be discouraged. Whether you have glaucoma, cataracts, blurry vision, macular degeneration…provided your problem is not too far advanced, you could get real help through the natural methods available.

Here’s some things I found in my research.

  1. Nutrition. This is very, very important. Research now shows that there are many nutrients that our eyes need. Lutein, zeaxanthin, bilberry, quercetin, vitamins A,C,E, zinc, eyebright, and omega 3 fatty acids, to name a few.
  2. Foods that contain nutrients that are good for the eyes include: spinach, kiwi fruit, grapes, orange juice, zucchini, eggs, salmon, sardines, kale, collard greens, parsley, red pepper, romaine lettuce, garlic, onions, corn, and blueberries.
  3. Those of us with blue eyes or blue-green eyes actually have a higher requirement for lutein and zeaxanthin, than do our brown-eyed friends. So with your vision supplement (and I do recommend a supplement) and the foods you eat, aim for at least 15 mg. Daily of lutein.
  4. Eye Exercises. These may be beneficial. The drawback, of course, is like any exercise, you need to keep them up on a regular basis.
  5. Vision habits. I actually took a course in this. One of the bad habits that is easy to get into, is staring. Remember to blink frequently. When you are looking at something, and then you look at something else, don’t just move your eyes. Be sure to turn your neck. It’s relaxing and better for your eyes. Also, remember to breathe. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Do not squint.
  6. Micro Current Stimulation. There are units available that may be very beneficial. The drawback I see to this is, like doing eye exercises; you must be disciplined in order to keep it up & do it on a regular basis.
  7. Magnet Therapy. This can help restore the correct pH balance to the retina of the eyes and be very beneficial. One nice thing about magnet therapy is that this can be done as you are sleeping.
  8. Eye Drops. N-Acetylcarnosine eye drops have been shown to sometimes reverse early-stage cataracts. There are also homeopathic and hyaluronic acid (HA)eye drops on the market that may be excellent for your eyes.
  9. Palming. This technique enables you to deeply relax and can help sharpen your vision. Rest your elbows comfortably on a table or desk. Cover your eyes with your cupped palms. Breathe deeply as you palm for a few minutes.

Please keep in mind that while all those things listed above, may be helpful, none is a cure-all. All will take time to be effective, so don’t give up if you don’t see improvement right away. Make sure also that you are getting adequate sleep at night, and are not under a lot of stress. In addition, prayer can make a real difference when it comes to healing any disease. Have faith and believe in God’s healing for your problem.

While this article deals primarily with things you can do to improve your vision, it should be noted that you can also do things to harm your vision. In fact, when I asked my eye doctor what would have been the cause of my vision problems, since I already had been following a pretty good nutrition program, he blamed it on stress. In addition, drugs that can harm the retina of the eye include: Plaqueoil, Chloridine, Fosamax type osteoporosis drugs, and the whole family of NSAIDS. You also should avoid trans fats, such as are found in margarine, shortening, French fries, fried chicken, doughnuts, cookies, pastries and crackers.

The same things that our bodies need to provide us with the best of overall health, may be even more important for our eyes. Follow a good nutrition program for your eyes, combined with one or more things in the list above, and you should experience positive results.

The Power of Negative Thinking

Before you attempt to banish a bad thought, consider what it could teach you. Negative emotions can help you pinpoint problems you need to address. What follows are three major types of negative thinking - and how you can use them for good.

Feelings of Inadequacy

Recognize it: I suck at my job. I don't have any good ideas. It's just a matter of time before I'm fired.

Overcome it: Maybe you do suck - at certain tasks. Sometimes our negative thoughts are true, but don't accept that until you look critically at the evidence. Some people excel in group meetings, while others shine when they work alone. Figure out which environment suits you better. Still struggling? Maybe you and your job are simply a poor match. Find another job - quickly. Researchers at the University of Texas found that negative employees stick around in dead-end jobs longer than their confident colleagues do.

General Pessimism

Recognize it: I'm going to be late for my flight and miss the meeting. There goes the account. There goes my year-end bonus. My wife is probably going to leave me.

Overcome it: Don't deny your worst-case-scenario thoughts, but focus on specific things you do have control over. This will help keep your anxiety from spiraling out of control. It might also extend your life: research in the journal Psychological Medicine linked high levels of anxiety in your twenties to higher rates of death from illness later in life.

Self-Esteem Issues

Recognize it: The brunette at the bar didn't return my smile. She's ignoring me like every other girl. Oh, God, I must be hideous.

Overcome it: Once you start generalizing your problems, it's hard to stop. When you feel a sense of heaviness in your body, focus on what just went through your mind. Then stop the cycle by breaking the problem into manageable pieces: did she even see me? Is that a ring on her finger? Do I have snot hanging from my nose? If you look at the situation in this way, you won't become overwhelmed so easily.

How Can You Help When You Don't Understand?

I tried to help my son back track through his text book so that we could discover the principals that he was supposed to be applying together. I tried to look up online guides so that I could connect the dots and figure out what the examples were looking for. I really looked for any solution that I could find, but it just was not clicking.

I took chemistry when I was in high school, but it seemed that his work was written in a different language altogether. What could I do? I was really stumped. What was worse was that each day that went by that I could not help him was another day that I was failing my son. I needed a specialist for this problem.

Of course the idea of a tutor crossed my mind. We live in a rural area, so it was really difficult to find someone locally, and nobody really wanted to travel to us without charging us through the nose for mileage. The next logical step that I could think of was online tutoring. I had heard of it, and though I had my doubts, it was time to take the plunge. I asked some of my friends about it; however I did not get any satisfactory replies. Some even scared me more, saying that lots of people do fraud on the Internet and advised me to do proper research before hiring a tutor. Their concern seemed to be genuine and that made me even more apprehensive about it. However I couldn’t afford to risk my child’s future for my apprehensions.

I checked around online and found the TransWebTutors.com site. After reading about the thousand hour minimum experience that their online tutors had, twenty four hours availability, and the range of the subjects that they cover, I felt that they were worth a try. I asked my son to try out the live tutor for an hour and then tell me how he felt about it.

About an hour and a half later, my son came back to me and told me that he was really absorbing what he was covering with his tutor. He said that the live help from someone that knows the subject was just what he needed to help him understand where he was missing the mark. Though he was not yet completely at home with chemistry, he was much more confident in the assignments he had completed for class the next day.

When he came home from school, he did something he had not done since he was seven. He came into the kitchen with his chest out, pulled a magnet off of the freezer, and stuck his homework to it. I came over to see what all of the ruckus was about. He had gotten an 83 on his homework assignment. He asked me if he could get same tutor’s help again that night, and I told him that he could go on any night that he felt he needed to.

If there is one thing that is worth investing in, it's your child's education. Their future depends on the skills that they learn early on and pull from as adults. I am confident that I have done the best that I could for my son, and I have officially gotten my job back as the in-house problem solver.

Menopause Hot Flashes Overview

When it comes to a hot flash, a woman will experience a brief sensation of heat that often leads to uncomfortable and embarrassing pools of sweat. A hot flash may also show on the face of the sufferer, turning their facial features red and flushed. While the cause is relatively unknown, there are certain triggers that increase the chances of feeling a hot flash including unhealthy diet, smoking, alcohol, and hot surroundings. Caffeine and spicy foods are very common triggers for hot flashes. As the body prepares to combat the effects of a hot flash, a woman displays flushed, red skin, as the skin attempts to cool down the body. The neck and face is where the outward hot flashes signs are seen. Inside, you may be feeling intense heat and discomfort. Perspiration also follows, which is another way the body tries to provide coolness during a hot flash attack. Additional menopause signs include chills after the hot flash, as well as an increase in heart rate. At night, hot flashes bring excessive sweating regardless of how many layers of clothing you may or may not be wearing. This condition, known as night sweats, can make it rather difficult to achieve a good sleep. Not every woman undergoes the same menopause hot flash experiences. Some episodes are more intense than others. Certain women tend to suffer from more attacks than some, while others unfortunately have to deal with hot flashes for the rest of their lives. More commonly, however, hot flashes tend to decrease after menopause and taper off altogether.

Natural Skin Care Products: Are They Healthier For Your Skin?

Natural beauty products: They are all the rage with supermodels, Hollywood stars, and the girl next door. But can these often pricey skin care products really make a difference for your skin, and if so, do you get what you pay for? Maybe not. If it is prettier, gentler, problem-free skin care you think you are getting, you could be in for a surprise. The perception is that natural ingredients are more pure and kinder to skin than something made in the lab, but nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, if you are buying the natural products to avoid breakouts or allergic reactions, you might be disappointed; they won't necessarily be a better option. But many women are going natural to avoid certain ingredients that research shows may be harmful. These include preservatives, such as parabens, and other ingredients including petrochemicals and phthalates, which some studies show can mimic the effects of hormones in the body or, at high levels, possibly increase the risk of cancer. While the Personal Care Products Council and other industry groups maintain these ingredients are safe, others, such as the Environmental Working Group, point to mounting evidence that consumers should avoid them. Unfortunately, shopping for naturals does not guarantee you won't find those ingredients in your skin care products. Because the government hasn't defined the term "natural," no regulations exist about what products can and cannot contain. But that may soon change. This summer, the Natural Products Association launches a new seal of approval aimed at identifying those products that meet a strict industry-driven standard to be considered natural. Products will start bearing the new seal by early 2009. 'Natural' Products: Read the Labels. In the meantime, learn to read the labels of your beauty products even those labeled "natural." Environmental groups caution against ingredients such as parabens (which are used as preservatives); petrochemicals and their by-products (often found in skin creams, foundations, and lip balms); mercury (in mascara and eyedrops); lead (in lipsticks); dioxane (in shampoos and body washes); and phthalates in nail polishes and hair sprays. Natural Beauty Products and Allergies. Be aware that all-natural ingredients can cause allergic reactions. One study in the British Journal of Dermatology shows that popular natural ingredients such as tea tree oil, feverfew, lavender, and jasmine brought on allergic or sensitivity responses in some people. Use the "sniff" test. So if a product says it contains natural strawberries but smells like imitation strawberry-flavored candy, then it may not be as natural as you think.
